How to Access Technical Assistance
Technical Assistance is a free service provided by HUD. It is available to HUD grantees and potential future grantees. It is designed according to each recipient's housing and/or community development needs.
Technical Assistance can include non-cash resources such as:
- board or staff training
- assistance in identifying funding sources
- understanding contracts and grants
- strategic planning
|
- determining client eligibility and rental payments
- referral to other community resources
- assistance in setting up effective financial systems
- on-site consultations with construction specialists
|
To become eligible to receive technical assistance you should call the HUD office nearest you and ask for the Community Planning and Development Office.
The HUD representative will ask you some questions and one of several actions might follow that conversation:
- The Field Office might have sufficient staff to directly provide the service you request
- The HUD representative might tell you that your group needs to complete some tasks (like becoming a 501c3) prior to receiving technical assistance
- You might be advised that the type of service you provide is not an eligible activity for HUD funding and isn't eligible for technical assistance
- You might be referred to one of HUD's Tennessee technical assistance providers. That provider will call your contact person and set a time for an on-site appointment. Following that assessment meeting, the provider will relay the information and recommendations for the delivery of the requested services to HUD for approval.

Technical assistance may not begin immediately. All requests must be approved by the HUD Field Office in writing before the provider can begin to deliver services. That can take a few weeks. However, the technical assistance provider can talk with you by phone to gather background information about your program while they await HUD approval.
